Ricardo Montalban is known to Ape fans as Armando the amiable circus owner from Escape from the Planet of the Apes and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Montalban was born in Mexico City and schooled at Fairfax High in Los Angeles, where he first appeared in school plays. Unable to break into the movies, he headed for New York and attained recognition on Broadway in such shows as Her Cardboard Lover with Tallulah Bankhead. After making nine Spanish-language films in his native Mexico he came back to California and starred with Esther Williams in Fiesta. Under contract to MGM he starred in such films as The Kissing Bandit, Battleground, Across the Wide Missouri, On An Island with You, Neptunes Daughter, Right Cross, Sombrero, Border Incident, Mystery Street, Two Weeks With Love, My Man and I and Latin Lovers. As a freelance star, he was seen in Sayonara, The Saracen Blade, A Life In The Balance, Sweet Charity, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and many others.[1]
