The President of the Assembly is leader of Ape City. Zaius is answerable to him but the governing orangutan elite agree on matters of faith and protection of ape order. The President oversees Taylor's interogation and finds in favour of Zaius.

- In Pierre Boulle's original book, the Ape President, a gorilla, has a more central role.
- The earliest movie scripts by Rod Serling retained Boulle's version of the gorilla president and his friendly welcome for Thomas (Taylor).[1] Serling's later revisions were similar, but changed the president's species to orangutan, reflecting a much more stereotypical division of the ape classes.[2]
