Inmate of the San Bruno Primate Shelter (formerly)

  +
Born in 2001, Maurice began life as a circus orangutan to entertain children and was taught American Sign Language by a kind circus worker. Before turning fifteen, Maurice was sold from his circus and sent to the San Bruno Primate Shelter just outside of San Francisco, California, where he bunkered with fellow apes Rocket, Cornelia, Buck, and countless others. There, he witnessed the cruelty of humans, especially towards his fellow apes, from his cage, particularly from the shelter's abusive handler, Dodge Landon, who tormented the apes and made Maurice fearful of humanity, but also wise with experience of how to stay safe from them by keeping his sign language secret.

In 2016, a hyper-intelligent chimpanzee named Caesar was brought to the shelter. Caesar's mind was enhanced by ALZ-112, a revolutionary Alzheimer's drug, making him the first of a new breed of evolved apes. Maurice befriended Caesar, showing him the ways of the facility, and warned him not to show his intelligence, lest Dodge torment him more. Caesar at first followed Maurice's lead, but after being rejected by his adoptive human father, Will Rodman, Caesar felt betrayed and angry, and began forming a plan to free the apes from the facility. Using his great intelligence, he established himself as the apes' new alpha, and through a conversation with Maurice, devised a plan to bring them to his level of intelligence so he could better lead them.

  +
Caesar escaped from the shelter and stole two canisters of the ALZ-113, the upgraded version of the ALZ-112, from Will's house, which he brough back to the shelter and ruptured in the apes' cages. The effect of the ALZ-113's vapor enhanced the intelligence of all the apes in the shelter, including Maurice. With Maurice's help, Caesar began teaching all the apes sign language and began plotting a massive uprising to escape the shelter.

A few nights later, Caesar finally confronted Dodge and the two fought, resulting in Caesar being forced to kill him. With the apes now organized as an army, Maurice and the others followed Caesar's lead out of the shelter and to the outskirts of San Francisco. They divided their forces to free other apes around the city, with Maurice joining Caesar to free the apes being experimented on with the ALZ-113 at Gen-Sys Laboratories. When the army reunited, Caesar led them to the Golden Gate Bridge, where they fought their way through in a six hour standoff with the human police. Eventually, the army overpowered and disarmed the police and made their way across the bridge to Muir Woods, where they escaped into the trees to start a new society free of human oppression.

Dawn of civilization
Overseer of Caesar's Ape Colony

  +
Over the following decade, Maurice served as one of Caesar's closest confidants, alongside Koba, a bitter bonobo who had been experimented on at Gen-Sys, and Rocket, the alpha of the shelter prior to Caesar taking over. Together, they built a large thriving village in the woods for them and their families to live in. Maurice became the overseer and teacher of the young apes of the colony. He taught them sign language along with Caesar's founding laws of their civilization, such as "ape not kill ape" and "apes together strong".

Maurice grew closer to Caesar, who had taken the chimpanzee Cornelia as his wife and had a son named Blue Eyes. They all came to view each other as family, and Maurice joined the Ape Council, becoming one of his most trusted advisors alongside Koba. Meanwhile, the ALZ-113 spread among the humans as an airborne virus that wiped out the majority of their population, save for a small number who were immune. By 2026, the apes believed the humans to be extinct, and Maurice came to realize that while he held no resentment towards them, he never truly knew their kindness, unlike Caesar.
Maurice is an altered orangutan and a former circus ape who resided at the San Bruno Primate Shelter with Cornelia, Rocket and Buck. He watched over Caesar and discovered his intelligence, hence learning about his ability to communicate with sign language. Seeing Caesar's potential, Maurice befriended him becoming Caesar's best and most trusted friend. During the Ape Rebellion, Maurice served as the second of Caesar's lieutenants, the first being Rocket. Over the next ten years, Maurice remains loyal to Caesar and serves as the colony's overseer and as a teacher to the new generation of apes.

Conflict with San Francisco's humans
History
  +
In 2026, the apes came across a group of humans in their forest, one of whom, Carver, shot Rocket's son, Ash, out of fear. When he heard the gunshot, Maurice joined Caesar and a group of apes to confront and intimidate the humans. The apes scared off the humans, and they fled, with a human teenager, Alexander, dropping his satchel as he ran. As Koba and some other apes followed the humans to the ruins of San Francisco, Maurice took an interest in the satchel, which contained within it a sketchbook and a graphic novel, fascinating him and making him see a softer, kinder side of humanity he hadn't seen before.

  +
The council then convened to decide what to do about the humans, and while Koba and Blue Eyes insisted they attack to protect their village, Maurice and a gorilla named Luca acknowledged it may be dangerous to engage them in battle, and they didn't know why the humans were even there to begin with. Caesar then concluded the meeting, siding with Maurice and announcing he had a peaceful way to deal with the humans.
Early Life
At some point, Maurice was an orangutan at a circus which is where he would learn the ability to communicate using sign language. Not much is known about anything further than that point and it is currently unknown what the cause of him being sent to the ape shelter is as he is shown to possess a rather kinder personality unlike the other apes there.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Meeting Caesar
When Caesar was first brought to the San Bruno Primate Shelter, Maurice took an immediate interest in him noting that Caesar was different from the other apes somehow and from a distance he watched as the chimpanzee struggled to fit in with his fellow apes. Maurice would then witness Caesar being horribly beaten by Rocket, the cruel alpha male of the shelter. He later watched as Caesar began to sulk in his cell over his time in the shelter. Through sign language, he asked Caesar if he was hurt bad, surprising Caesar as he had no idea another ape at the shelter knew sign language as well. Maurice then reveals to Caesar that he is a former circus orangutan and because the humans dislike smart apes he keeps it a secret from the shelter staff. This encounter relieved and lifted Caesar's spirits as he finally made a friend at the shelter and the two apes would be seen conversing with each other more often.

  +
The next morning, Maurice and an army apes marched on horseback to San Francisco to confront the human colony. Maurice watched as Caesar confronted Malcolm and Dreyfus, the human leaders, and the entire colony. Caesar announces that while the apes do not want war, they will fight to protect their home, while stating if the humans stay in their territory, the apes will stay in theirs.
Evolving
One night, Maurice noticed Caesar escaping from his cell and heading to the play den. Later on, he along with the other apes watched as Caesar and his new friend Buck the gorilla threatened Rocket. After Caesar overthrew Rocket as Alpha, Maurice was puzzled as to why Caesar would later make Rocket give cookies (he stole from Dodge Landon) to all the apes in the facility. Maurice then asked Caesar his reason to having Rocket give the cookies to all the apes, Caesar replied that apes are weak separately but strong when together however, the pair soon saw two apes fight in the water behaving foolishly causing Maurice to point out the flaw by saying "Apes stupid". This comment unknowingly gave Caesar an idea and prompted him to return to his old home and steal canisters of Will's ALZ-113 drug and expose the other apes to it. After receiving the ALZ-113 overnight, Maurice was examined by Caesar who saw that he had new green eyes which showed his increased intelligence. Maurice nodded his head in thanks to Caesar for giving him new intelligence. Maurice is then seen with the other apes in the den as Caesar tells them of his plans to escape the shelter and head to the Muir Woods Park.

  +
Soon after the apes' march into the city, Malcolm made his way to the ape village with a small group. He explained to Caesar that they had been out in the woods looking for a dam that could produce power for their colony and allow them to continue to survive. Malcolm showed the apes the dam, and Caesar agreed to let them stay and work on it. While the team worked on the dam, Maurice met with Alexander, who turned out to be Malcolm's son. Alexander was nervous but offered to show him more of his drawings and comics, allowing Maurice to finally embrace the goodness of humanity, and take it along with their dark side.
Liberation
He would pay witness to Caesar's confrontation with Dodge Landon growing agitated as Caesar was shocked by the caretaker but would be relieved as the latter defeated the human and lock him in a cell. Maurice would be freed from his cell and escaped the shelter with Caesar and the other apes who would head for the outskirts of the city where Caesar divided his forces into two groups. Buck and other apes were tasked with freeing the captive apes in the San Francisco Zoo while Maurice and Rocket would aid Caesar in freeing their fellow apes at the Gen-Sys Laboratories which boosted up their numbers. The evolved apes then met up with Buck's group and headed out to the streets that broke out into chaos.

  +
After a disagreement about guns and the banishment of Carver, Maurice and some of the other apes joined Malcolm's group in trying to repair the dam. When Koba returned from scouting out the city, he demanded to see Caesar, and tried to attack Alexander and Malcolm, who he believed were against the apes. However, Maurice, in his newfound sympathy for humans, came between Koba and Malcolm, protecting his new friends.
Ape Leader
With more apes in the army whose numbers rose to hundreds, Maurice became the third-in-command of the ape army and the leader of the orangutan forces. Later, in the city he and Buck were cornered by the police, but he used a manhole lid as a weapon to throw at one of the police cars, which caused it to crash into a small shop while Buck threw parking meter at another police car stopping it dead in it's tracks. The two would meet up with Caesar and Rocket as they used a trolley to travel to their next target the Golden Gate Bridge.

Battle on the bridge
+
Koba's usurpation
  +
When the dam was repaired and San Francisco had its power restored, the apes joined in a massive celebration for both their success and the recovery of Cornelia, who had been suffering from a horrible illness. During the celebration, the sound of a gunshot rang out, and Caesar's body fell from the trees to the apes' horror, all as the village burst into flames. In the midst of the confusion, Blue Eyes came out holding a human gun, and Koba declared the humans killed Caesar. Knowing Malcolm and his group were right next to him when Caesar was shot and they were in fact innocent, Maurice told them to run for their lives.
Once at the Golden Gate Bridge, the apes caused massive chaos which made the humans flee in terror. This act would alert the police force and have them put the bridge on lockdown and a form a blockade to hold off the apes as they approached the bridge's center. However, Caesar anticipating this strategy and had his army stopped. Caesar ordered the new recruit Koba to take some chimpanzees up the high wires of the bridge to attack the police from above while Maurice, the other orangutans, and some of the chimpanzees were ordered by Caesar to attack from the bottom of the bridge supports. As he climbed beneath the bridge, Maurice had noticed a chimpanzee named Wolfie fall to his death after being shot down by the humans. This angered him to the point where he had his group climb faster to the bridge's center. While this was happening Caesar had the gorilla's use their strength to push a bus in the range of police bullets. With the police out of bullets the Caesar led his forces against the human forces causing a fierce battle. Now without any obstacles, Maurice and his group then join their brethren in the battle and manage to defeat the police blockade and celebrate in their victory against the humans.

  +
As the humans fled, Koba took control of the ape colony, and ordered a siege on San Francisco while the humans were vulnerable. Maurice, Rocket, Luca, and some other apes refused to follow Koba's violent uprising and kill humans, believing Caesar wouldn't have wanted this, and that Malcolm's group was innocent. As a result, Koba and his followers proceeded to lock them in former Simian Flu quarantine cells as they engaged the humans in a massive battle and took control of the city, all while Maurice watched helplessly from his cage.
Freedom At Last
The apes would then leave the bridge and head for the safety of Muir Woods Park, which they made their new home. Maurice and the other apes watched as Caesar said his final goodbyes to his adoptive human father Will Rodman. Afterwards, Caesar turned to walk to his favorite tree and turned around to walk to his new comrades as Maurice and the others started to stand upright like Caesar, who ran up to and climbed at the top of the tree where he was joined by Maurice and Rocket, who sat on adjacent trees overlooking the city of San Francisco which was now in utter chaos.

  +
The day after the battle, Maurice and the other captives escaped with the help of Blue Eyes, who turned on Koba after he killed Ash. They then made their way to an abandoned house in the city's suburban areas, where they found a still-alive Caesar being nursed back to health by Malcolm's wife, Ellie. Knowing Koba was about to launch a full-scale war against the humans, Caesar led his allies back into the city, and to the top of a massive skyscraper where Koba was waiting, all while Malcolm argued with a vengeful Dreyfus, who wanted to kill the apes, at the base.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm
Maurice serves as one of Caesar's commanders as the apes struggle for survival after the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge. Caesar assigns him a group of apes to lead away from the humans while Rocket leads the second group while Caesar leads a third. When Cornelia begins talking about how different forest food is to jungle food, Maurice takes her side much to Caesar's annoyance.

More To come...

  +
Maurice and the other apes watched in horror as Koba and Caesar viciously fought for the title of Ape King on the top of the tower. Just as the battle was reaching its peak, Dreyfus detonated the explosives he set along the tower's interior, sending Caesar and Koba flying and rubble crashing down over the apes. When the dust settled, Koba grabbed a hold of his gun, which he had tossed aside at the battle's beginning, and fired on Caesar and the other apes. Caesar managed to take cover, but Maurice's right cheek was grazed by one of the stray bullets, leaving a permanent scar. Seeing his wounded friend, a furious Caesar tackled Koba and left him dangling from a ledge, before dropping him to his death.

The Human-Ape War
Creating a Village
  +
Despite Koba's demise, Malcolm informed the apes that Dreyfus had contacted a military base, who were on their way to San Francisco to fight the apes, before the final battle. Malcolm and his family were told to flee to safety by Caesar, and so they vanished before the war began. Maurice then stood by Caesar's side as his chief advisor as the Ape Army fought the human paramilitary group, Alpha-Omega, in battle after battle, for the next two years.
Ten years later, Maurice has helped the other apes build a large thriving village in the Muir Woods Park where he has become an overseer and teacher to the young apes of the growing ape colony. Because of his role as a teacher many of the apes evolved or otherwise have learned how to use the ability of sign language as a way of communication. Maurice appears to have take on a lawgiver role teaching the others the "Ape not kill ape" law which is shown to be a serious warning to those that would dare break the colony's rules. He has earned himself a place in Ape Council and he has remained close friends with Caesar to the point where they view each other as brothers and to the point where Caesar's oldest son Blue Eyes sees Maurice as an uncle.

  +
In that time, Caesar became more angrier and brutal, but still compromising and empathetic, simply trying to find a way to end the war and stop the bloodshed, with Maurice often acting as his voice of reason in many situations. The apes also found a new haven deep in the forest, hidden by large waterfall.
Discovering Human Survivors
Maurice is first seen teaching the younger generation in the village after Caesar's hunting party returns. After the birth of Caesar's second son, Maurice sits with him and congratulates him. They then talk about the humans and how few they have seen in the past ten years. Maurice states that unlike Caesar, he never got to know the good side of humans, only their bad side. The next day, Maurice awakens to the sound of a gunshot and accompanies the other apes to its origins where they discover that a group of humans have shot Ash (Rocket's son). The apes then scare off the humans by yelling at them (in English) as the humans flee, Maurice takes an immediate interest in Alexander's satchel (which was left behind following Carver's accidental attack on Ash) while Caesar orders koba and others to follow the humans. Maurice is later seen fiddling with his new discovery while the other apes are shown arguing over what to do with the humans. He takes an active part in the meeting by disagreeing with Koba's wish to immediately attack the remaining humans, stating they do not know how many of them remain. Their argument would be interrupted by Caesar who says he has a more peaceful way to settle things with the humans. The next morning, Maurice would march into the city with his people as Caesar issues his warning of war to the humans if they dare enter ape territory again before returning the satchel

  +
Two years into the conflict, Alpha-Omega attacked an ape trench, resulting in an ape victory albeit with many casualties. Red. a former follower of Koba who joined Alpha-Omega with a turncoat group of apes called Donkeys, convinced a terrified gorilla named Winter to reveal the location of the apes' command base in exchange for his service and sparing his life. That night, Alpha-Omega's leader, Colonel McCullough, led a strike team into the apes' home, and while Caesar was occupied, slaughtered Cornelia and Blue Eyes. When Caesar found them dead in his bedroom, all empathy he had left for humans was stripped from him, and he became cold and emotional, with not even Maurice able to have him see reason.
Interest in Humans
Later on, Maurice and his students are in the woods watching over the humans as they all wake up. He looks through Alexander's comics as the human questions him if he can read to which the ape doesn't answer. Maurice later sits with Alexander and becomes fascinated by his comics and drawings, and begins to become sympathetic to the humans just as Caesar was to them as well. Maurice would then join his people when the humans go to work at the San Francisco Dam to restore power to the city and is question by Caesar as to where Koba had went. Later when the humans are in trouble at the dam Maurice and his friends help them escape from the area before they drown from the rising water flooding the building. Maurice would then witness Koba angrily walk in the building and attack the humans while demanding Caesar to come out. When Koba was about to attack Alexander and Malcolm, Maurice got in the way and protected his new human friends from the angry ape and would as Caesar nearly beats Koba to death for his insolence but stops himself by remembering the "Ape Not Kill Ape" law (as it is the first Law of Caesar).

  +
The day after the ambush, the ape colony prepared to trek out to a new home that Blue Eyes and Rocket had found weeks earlier. However, Caesar, blinded by his hatred, left his surviving young son, Cornelius, with Blue Eyes' widow, Lake, and began his own quest to find Alpha-Omega's base and kill the Colonel for what he'd done to his family. Joining him on his quest were Maurice, Rocket, and Luca, who insisted on coming to make sure he came back alive.
Koba's Usurpation
When the city of San Francisco has it's power restored, the apes and the humans would celebrate not just for the humans benefits but for the royal ape family when Cornelia suddenly walks out alive and well. The apes would continue to celebrate until the sound of gunshot is heard and Caesar's body falls from a tree branch much to the horror of his people. Along with that the Ape Village suddenly bursts into flames causing the apes to flee from their home as Blue Eyes emerges with a gun and the ape hating human Carver's baseball cap. Blue Eyes his new discovery with the other apes while Maurice watching speaks by telling Malcolm and his family to run for their lives. As they flee, Koba comes out of nowhere taking up the mantle of Ape king by telling the apes that humans attacked and killed Caesar and burnt their homes. He then orders them to retaliate by killing humans while they are vulnerable. It is unknown where Maurice went while the rest of the rowdy and angry apes took up arms and went on to attack the city killing many humans.

  +
On their journey, they came across a young human girl, who was terrified of them and without anyone to care for her. Maurice calmed the girl down, and showed her the apes weren't their enemy, but the girl couldn't respond, being unable to speak. Maurice realized the girl wouldn't survive alone, and so insisted that they take her with them, despite Caesar's protests to abandon her. As the team continued their journey, Maurice began teaching her American Sign Language, and the two grew very close with Maurice becoming the girl’s surrogate father.
Imprisonment
Following the supposed death of Caesar, Koba and his army have seized control of San Francisco imprisoning any human survivor in cells due to wanting them to see the oppression of apes. Koba also imprisoned any ape who refuses to kill human and remain a loyal follower to Caesar on a bus right next to the humans cells, these apes imprisoned include Maurice, Rocket, Luca and others. Maurice would later be visited by Blue Eyes who he warns to stay away for his own safety

  +
The team eventually came across an Alpha-Omega camp where they found Winter, who was now working for the Colonel's men. When Caesar and the others cornered him, Winter revealed that the Colonel was camping at a border base. Winter attempts to call for help, to which Caesar covers his mouth to prevent him from doing so; inadvertently suffocating him to death, as Maurice and the apes watches in shock.
Restoring Caesar to Power
Later on, Maurice and other captives would sit and are forced to watch the madness Koba has begun before noticing Caesar's emblem appear on the window of the bus and would see blue eyes at the corner telling them to be quiet and wait for his return. At night, the captive apes start a ruckus causing their guards to try and quell the situation but they are overpowered by the prisoners who shake the bus on the other side, this act distracts the guard ape long enough for the human prisoners to escape. Blue Eyes then returns and liberates his uncles before they all flee the area. The assemble group joins blue eyes and return to the Rodman House where they find their leader and friend Caesar still alive telling them Koba's madness will end. Maurice would be a close witness to Caesar and Koba's fight as they battle for the title of the Ape king. When Koba gets hold of a gun and open fire on the other apes Maurice is injured by one of Koba's stray bullets gaining a scar in the process. For the rest of the battle he was shown being carried to safety by Blue Eyes and Rocket before watching as Caesar tackles Koba and leaves the bonobo hanging from the ledge of the Human Colony's building. The wounded Maurice watches as Caesar drops Koba to his death and would celebrate Caesar restoration to power and join him in regrouping with the other apes. Maurice is then seen bowing down to Caesar along with the other apes awaiting the impending battle with the humans to come.

  +
It wasn't long before they made a startling discovery: Bad Ape, an aloof but empathetic ape gifted with the same intelligence as Maurice and the colony. Bad Ape revealed he was a zoo ape who gained intelligence from the Simian Flu and escaped an ape massacre at the height of the pandemic. While the group was with Bad Ape, he gifted the human girl a Chevy Nova car's wordmark, which became the inspiration for the name Maurice would give her, Nova. Bad Ape then revealed he had been to the border facility, and led the group there. On their journey, Maurice helped Caesar bond more with Nova, and his compassion for humanity began to return.
Personality
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Maurice is an orangutan that speaks very little. He is kind hearted and is the first to befriend Caesar after discovering that the chimp could also speak using sign language. He is also intelligent, wise and extremely loyal when it comes to his friends. When he is first introduced in the first film, he is shown to be cynical, gloomy, sceptical and extremely pessimistic. He is respectful to Caesar and admires his intelligence and ambition, and is keen to listen to Caesar's ideas. He is also the first that Caesar bonds with in captivity, since they both know sign language and have similar methods of thought.

  +
When the team reached the outskirts of the border facility, they were ambushed by human soldiers. Rocket and Luca killed them, saving the others, but at the cost of Luca's life. Maurice realized just how much of a risk it had been to come out to kill the Colonel, and urged Caesar to lead them back to rejoin the colony on their search for a new home. Caesar refused, more determined than ever to kill the man who had taken so much from him. Maurice pointed out that he sounded like Koba in his hateful obsession, and Caesar, furious at the comparison, ordered Maurice and the others to rejoin the colony alone, and left for the facility to kill the Colonel alone.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
His curiosity towards Malcolm and his family prompts him to befriend Alexander, Malcolm's son who teaches him more about the human world by showing him a photo of his late mother and his book of drawings. The orangutan sees through his own eyes what some of the humans are like and that some can be trusted which sees his opinion matched with Caesar's that there is some good in humans. His new view of humans led to him warning Malcolm and his family to run for their lives during Koba's usurpation against Caesar as the alpha male of the apes.

  +
Despite Caesar's orders to leave him, Maurice and the others stayed behind, hoping Caesar would return, but after a day passed, they made their way to the base to make sure he was alright. When they arrived, they saw that not only had he been taken prisoner, but the entire ape colony had been captured and was being forced to build a wall to help protect Alpha-Omega from the opposing Northern Military. Horrified, Maurice and the others desperately began concocting a plan to free the apes before it was too late.
Moreover when Koba took power, Maurice was one of the few apes to stand against him and remain a loyal supporter to Caesar despite being imprisoned on a bus for his insolence. This shows that he is faithful only to his true leader and good friend as his loyalty was not tainted by thoughts of vengeance on the innocent humans during Koba's reign.

  +
While Maurice and Rocket planned, Nova wandered into the camp and tried to help Caesar, and to save her life, Rocket allowed himself to be captured to distract the soldiers. Along with Caesar and Lake, Rocket began formulating a plan for escape from the inside, while Maurice, Bad Ape, and Nova located an underground tunnel that led under the complex's prisons. They used the tunnels to go underneath the prisons. While they were searching, Maurice told Nova that she was very brave, and that she was something beyond human and ape.
Abilities
*Animal Strength: Like all orangutans, Maurice is extremely powerful and strong, during the Ape Rebellion, he is shown to be strong enough to lift a manhole lid, and throw it at one of the police cars, which caused it to crash into a small shop.

*Advanced Intelligence: Maurice, like many other apes of the San Bruno Primate Shelter was exposed to the ALZ-113 drug by Caesar who had decided to make the other apes intelligence in order for them to escape with him to freedom. Even before he was exposed to the ALZ-113, he had some level of intelligence, after Caesar arrived at the ape shelter, he was observing him and Maurice realize that Caesar is much more intelligent than a normal ape, after he was exposed to the ALZ-113, Maurice became much more intelligent than before, it is unknown how much his advanced intelligence and IQ has increased.

*Sign Language: Like Caesar, Maurice knows American Sign Language. Maurice uses it as a way of communication, little is known about how or by who he learned it from, other then that he came from the circus. In Dawn, Maurice is shown teaching young apes the basics of sign language in order for them to communicate proving that he is very skilled in teaching it to other apes as many apes either evolved or otherwise have learned the art from him and Caesar.

*Expert Combatant: Due to him being the third-in-command of Caesar's Ape Army, Maurice is a capable fighter. As seen when the apes were battling the humans during the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge, Maurice was able to defeat many police officers before they were forced to retreat.

*Expert Leader: Due to him being the third-in-command of the ape army, Maurice is a capable leader. During the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge, he led the Orangutans and some of the Chimpanzees under the bridge in order to attack the police officers when their attention was focused on the other apes, this tactic was successful in obtaining victory.

*Speech: Having inhaled the ALZ-113, Maurice like the other Evolved apes has gained the ability of speech. During Dawn, his only dialogue outside of sign language is one word, "Run" which was warning for Malcolm and his family to flee when Koba took power. It is unknown how well the rest of his English is.

Maurice, Bad Ape, and Nova helped the apes out of their prisons and began herding them out of the facility just as the Northern Military arrived and fought Alpha-Omega, but Caesar planned to stay behind to finish off the Colonel, despite having regained empathy for humanity. When all the apes had escaped, they watched as the battle raged on, until finally Caesar destroyed a leaking gas tank with a grenade, destroying the base and only barely escaping to rejoin the colony.
Relationships
Friends and Allies
Caesar
Caesar is Maurice's best friend. Like Maurice, Caesar was locked up at the San Bruno Primate Shelter. Maurice took an interest in Caesar noting that he was different from the other chimpanzees at the shelter. He observed Caesar as he struggled to adjust to life with the other apes in the building and would watch from the sidelines as Caesar found himself in an unnecessary fight with the previous alpha, Rocket. After seeing what Caesar was capable of in terms of communication, Maurice decided to befriend the chimpanzee by asking (in sign language) how his wound, from his recent fight with Rocket felt. This surprised Caesar as he had no idea that one of the apes in the facility could use sign language. This encounter led to a developing friendship as the two apes would be seen together more often talking about their respective views of apes. Maurice was also unknowingly the one who gave Caesar the idea to break into his foster parents' house and steal the ALZ-113 drug in order to make the other apes more intelligent. When seeing the apes the morning after, Caesar examined them and discovered that they had inherited the green eyes signifying their new intelligence. Maurice nodded at Caesar in gratitude for giving him this new intelligence and the two apes would later lead a rebellion taking place in San Francisco. Because of his close association with Caesar, Maurice became one of the commanders during the assault on the Golden Gate Bridge.

  +
A new home
Over the next ten years, Maurice still remains loyal to Caesar and is one of his closest companions along with Rocket, Koba and Cornelia and serves as an honorary uncle to Caesar's sons. Also, Maurice served as a moral compass to both Caesar and Cornelia during the early days of their marriage. When Koba opened fire on the other apes, one of his stray bullets struck Maurice which deeply angered Caesar as he turned to see his friend in pain causing him to tackle Koba and let him fall to deserved end. After the battle with Koba is finished, Maurice is shown kneeling to Caesar along with the other apes (before the battle with the humans)showing that his loyalty remains only to Caesar.

  +
Led; by Caesar and following Rocket's directions, Maurice and the ape colony trekked for miles through forests and across a desert to find the oasis that; Blue Eyes and Rocket had found, a landscape; with lush vegetable life and running water. The apes finally settled down in their new home and Maurice sat; with Caesar; who had spared the Colonel's life. As they sat admiring the apes' new home, Caesar revealed he suffered a fatal wound from the battle and would soon pass away.

  +
A distraught Maurice began to cry, but Caesar promised that; the ape colony would be fine; without him. Maurice in turn promised to look after Cornelius and that; he would grow up knowing what his father stood for and everything that; he did for the apes. Caesar then died peacefully, knowing that; the apes were safe and that; he had left behind a legacy of perseverance and honor that; would be continued; by Maurice and his son, Cornelius.
Rocket
Rocket is Maurice's close friend. Though they have little to no interaction, Maurice and Rocket seemed to be civil. Through a conversation he has with Caesar, Maurice sees Rocket as brutish and somewhat stupid as he asks why Caesar gave Rocket a cookie in order to bribe him. Caesar explains that apes that act alone are weak while apes that act together are strong.

  +
In honor of Maurice's friend and king, Caesar, Maurice immortalized his legacy; by writing a book he called Caesar's Story and had the other apes contribute the tales of their experiences; with him to help preserve Caesar's memory for future generations.
As the years go by, Maurice and Rocket have become closer as Maurice is one of the teachers and honorary uncle to Rocket's son, Ash.

  +
Personality
Despite limited interaction during the reappearance of the humans, Maurice and Rocket are together then they arrive on the scene after Ash is shot, Maurice shows great concern for Rocket and both agree with Caesar then the Alpha decides to going into the city to threaten the humans. Also, when Caesar's loyalists are caged by Koba, Rocket and Maurice are together in the same cage before being freed by Blue Eyes and taken to the Rodman House. During Caesar's fight with Koba, Maurice and Rocket watch, terrified as their friend fights their new enemy. When Maurice is shot by Koba, Rocket stays by his side along with Blue Eyes showing nothing but concern for his wounded friend. Afterwards, the two are then seen kneeling before Caesar before they go off to war with the human soldiers.

  +
Maurice is a kind-hearted orangutan; who speaks very little, was rather intelligent even before being exposed to the ALZ-113, and is immensely loyal to his friends. Despite his compassion towards other apes, he was rather cynical and pessimistic when he first met Caesar. When Caesar exposed all the apes to the 113 and led them to freedom, Maurice grew more hopeful and wise.

  +
As Maurice took on the role of teacher and council member in the new ape society, he also became Caesar's main advisor and close confidante. But he remained skeptical about whether there could; be any good in humanity, as he only saw their darkness. But; when the apes encountered Malcolm's group, Maurice became fascinated; by Malcolm's son, Alexander and the two became friends, as Alexander taught him more of the human world. Maurice became softer and kinder towards humans, having now seen their capacity for both good and evil, so stood; by both the humans and Caesar during Koba's brief coup of the ape colony.
Cornelia
Cornelia is Maurice's queen, former inmate and friend. Despite not having any known interaction while they were in captivity, Maurice values Cornelia's input as seen when they were struggling to survive just days after the fight on the bridge. Maurice takes Cornelia's advice about finding food into stride much to the annoyance of Caesar. Maurice sees just how compatible Caesar and Cornelia as they are too much like each other and served as a moral compass towards the couple in the early days of their marriage. Due to no interaction when the humans are rediscovered, Maurice indirectly mentions Cornelia during his conversation with Caesar in which congratulates Caesar over Milo's birth.

  +
Due to Maurice being the most gentle of apes; he is rarely aggressive and violent; unless the situation calls for it; for example; when the apes went to war; with the humans, Maurice was still sympathetic towards humans, but he was willing to kill them; in order to protect his people. He became Caesar's closest confidante as the war became more brutal and acted as his voice of reason as Caesar descended; into rage and vengeance after McCullough had killed his family. Caesar's growing brutality strained his relationship; with Maurice, but in the end, the two were still fiercely loyal to one another.
Buck
Buck was a fellow inmate of Maurice's at the Primate Sanctuary. Though they barely had any direct interaction it was shown they were able to get along and fight together as comrades. After their freedom was given to them by Caesar, they joined his rebellion and liberated their fellow apes. Buck met up with Maurice on the streets of San Francisco where they were approached by two police cars. Buck then cooperated with Maurice by each throwing a parking meter and manhole lid to disable the oncoming vehicles and both joined Caesar and Rocket on top of a tram.

  +
Maurice's gentle nature also helped him care for the young human girl Nova and take her in as his adoptive daughter. She helped make both Caesar and Maurice better because of her presence, strengthening Maurice's compassion for humans and returning Caesar to his empathetic state. When Caesar rescued the apes and led them all to a new home, free of the human soldiers that; took so many ape lives, Maurice watched as his best friend and king quietly passed away. He promised him that; he would care for his last remaining son, Cornelius and honored his legacy; with a book chronicling his life, loyal to his friend to his last moments of life.
Blue Eyes
Blue Eyes is Maurice's Prince, one of Maurice's students and honorary nephew. Being an old friend of Blue Eyes' parents Caesar and Cornelia, Maurice has watched Blue Eyes grow up and taught him along with other apes his age. He loves Blue Eyes like a son and is seen to be openly concerned for his welfare as seen when Blue Eyes finds him and Rocket locked up for defying Koba. Maurice tells Blue Eyes to look after himself and to be careful. When Caesar orders Blue Eyes to free any apes who have refused to follow Koba, Maurice is one of the first apes to be freed when Blue Eyes pulls the metal bars off one of the windows of their prison. Blue Eyes then takes Maurice and the other rebel apes back to Caesar at the Rodman House before they head off to confront Koba. Maurice are together then Caesar fights Koba. When Maurice is accidentally injured when Koba opens fire on Caesar during the fight, Blue Eyes, horrified, tends to him.

  +
Abilities
Ash
  +
*Animal Strength: Like all orangutans, Maurice is extremely powerful and strong, during the Ape Rebellion, he is proven to be strong enough to lift a manhole lid and throw it at one of the police cars; which caused it to crash; into a police car. In War, Maurice was able to beat Boyle to death; with ease.
Ash was one of Maurice's students and honorary nephew. Being an old friend of Ash's father Rocket, Maurice has watched Ash grow up and taught him along with other apes his age. Like with Blue Eyes and Milo, Maurice loves Ash like a son shown when he expressed deep concern by looking at the young ape after he "accidentally" got shot by the ape hating human Carver in the forest.

  +
*Genius-Level Intellect: Maurice's intellect is the highest among all apes and even humans; surpassed only by Caesar, Blue Eyes and Cornelius, even before Maurice was exposed to the ALZ-113, he had some level of intelligence, after Caesar arrived at the ape shelter, he was observing him and realize that the latter is much more intelligent than a normal ape, after he was exposed to the ALZ-113, Maurice became much more intelligent than before. By the time of the events of Dawn; Maurice's intelligence and IQ has increased to the point when he has been appointed by Caesar as one of the teachers of the new generation of apes, as well as being the overseer of the San Francisco Ape Colony.
  +
*Sign Language: Like Caesar, Maurice knows sign language, as he uses it as a way of communication, little is known about how or by who he learned it from, other then that he came from the circus. In Dawn, Maurice is seen teaching the young apes the basics of sign language in order for them to communicate proving that he is very skilled in teaching it to other apes as many apes either evolved or otherwise have learned the art from him and Caesar.
  +
*Expert Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Due to Maurice being the third-in-command of the Ape Army, he is a capable combatant. As seen when the apes were battling the humans during the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge, Maurice was able to defeat many police officers before they were forced to retreat.
  +
*Expert Horse Rider: Like many of the other apes, Maurice is able to ride a horse with ease.
  +
*Expert Leader: During the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge, Maurice was seen as a capable leader as seen when he led the orangutans and some of the chimpanzees under the bridge in order to attack the police officers when their attention was focused on the other apes, this tactic was successful in obtaining victory.
  +
*Speech: Having inhaled the ALZ-113, like the other evolved apes, Maurice has gained the ability of speech. During Dawn, his only dialogue outside of sign language is one word, "Run" which was warning for Malcolm and his family to flee when Koba took power. In War, he spoke to give Nova her name, at the end, it is revealed Maurice's speech is broken as he spoke to Caesar before his death, promising him that Cornelius will know who his father was and what he did for him and the ape colony.

Milo
+
Relationships
  +
*See Maurice/Relationships.
Milo is Caesar's second son thereby making him Maurice's second prince and honorary nephew due to him being a close friend of the infant's father. Though he doesn't have any direct interaction with the infant at the time of his birth, Maurice happily congratulates Caesar on the birth of his second son showing he was very happy with the new addition to the growing ape colony.

Luca
+
Notes
  +
* Maurice was one of the main protagonists in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the deuteragonist in War for the Planet of the Apes. He also served as the main narrator of Caesar’s Story.
Luca is Maurice's good friend not much is known about their relationship due to their limited interaction, they appear to be on good terms as they are both members in Caesar's Ape Council. When Koba overthrew Caesar both Maurice and Luca were imprisoned for their loyalty to Caesar only to be freed by Blue Eyes. The two worked together to bring Caesar back to power and intently watched as Koba and Caesar battled for supremacy of the ape colony. Later, Koba taking a gun opened fire on the apes with many being killed or gravely wounded Maurice being one of the many injured. As Maurice was being tended to by Blue Eyes and other Luca is seen nearby looking at the wounded Orangutan showing that he possesses concern for his friend's life and both watched as Caesar put an end to Koba's reign. The two were later seen as Caesar took back his place as leader of the apes and both look to him for answers as the apes prepared for war against the humans.

  +
* Maurice was likely named after Maurice Evans, who played Doctor Zaius in the original Planet of the Apes. However, the character used the American pronunciation of the name, rather than Evans' British pronunciation.

  +
* Maurice is the only known orangutan in the Ape Colony to have been given the ALZ-113 drug.
Alexander
  +
** It is likely the orangutans have been exposed to the virus after living with the other apes for so long.
Alexander is Maurice's human friend and mentor. When Alexander accidentally drops his satchel in the forest after the humans' first confrontation with Caesar and his apes, Maurice retrieves Alexander's bag on Caesar's orders. He later goes through it while the council are arguing over what is to be done about Ash's shooting and discovers the photo of a young Alexander with his late mother. Later, Maurice and a group of his young students encounter Alexander asleep at Malcolm's campsite where they sit and watch Alexander who awakes, holding his book. Later, Maurice meets up with Alexander alone and sits with him as he learns how to read from the teenager. When Koba threatens Alexander and his father in the dam control room, Maurice steps in to protect them, shaking his head as a clear threat to the bonobo to leave them alone.

  +
* At age twenty-five during Dawn, Maurice was one of the six oldest apes to appear.
  +
** The other apes were Koba, Buck, Luca, Rocket, and Caesar.
  +
* After Caesar's death, it can be assumed that Maurice played some role in raising Cornelius alongside Lake and Rocket.
  +
* In War, Maurice is showing small signs of adaptation, as he appears to be able to knuckle-walk and arch his back like chimpanzees and gorillas, as opposed to an orangutan's traditional fist-walking and their back appears hunched.

Malcolm
+
Trivia
  +
* Maurice is likely named after Maurice Evans, the actor who portrayed Dr. Zaius in the original film series.
Malcolm is another one Maurice's new human friends. Having befriended Alexander, Maurice becomes friendly with the boy's father shown when they both in step in to protect Alexander from Koba who is angry with Caesar for "choosing" the humans over the apes. Maurice shakes his head at Koba as a warning to back off which greatly displeases Koba. When Koba usurped Caesar and prepared to launch an attack on the other humans in San Francisco, Maurice speaking (for the first time) tells Malcolm and his family to run for their lives.

  +
* There are many postings on Karin Konoval's official public Facebook page that tell about her experiences getting to know real life orangutans. Konoval later confirmed that Maurice was based on "feisty" Bruno from the Los Angeles Zoo, on the "heart and soul" of Towan from Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, and on Clyde the walking orangutan.
  +
* Karin Konoval had to wear weights as part of her motion capture suit.
  +
* Maurice was the third known ape to speak in the Chernin-produced Apes franchise. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, he told the humans in the Ape Village to leave when Koba took over with only one word, "Run".
  +
* Maurice received a scar on the top of his right cheek after Koba fired at him, Blue-Eyes, Rocket and Luca.
  +
* Maurice is the first ape that Caesar ever communicated with in sign.
  +
** He was also the last ape he communicated with in English at the time of his death.
  +
* Due to the time gap between War for the Planet of the Apes and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Maurice would've passed away sometime between those years.

Koba
Koba was Maurice's good friend turned enemy. Their first known interaction was about a week after the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge, according to the prequel novel, Firestorm. Koba offers Maurice some food to which the orangutan is thankful. Koba notices that Maurice is slightly standoffish towards him but remembers everyone is like this around him. When Koba calls the gorillas "Caterpillars" because they aren't intelligent like them, Maurice scolds him for using the term and reminds him that the gorillas might not be as intelligent as them, they are still their fellow apes and require just as much respect as the other apes do. After returning from the human colony, Koba becomes frustrated with Maurice's lack of stomach to fight (blaming it on his fruitarian diet) and his persistence on having patience.

  +
Appearances
Over the past ten years, the pair have become closer and have established a friendship though Maurice was still wary of Koba because of his violent past with human. When Koba prepared to attack the humans Alexander and Malcolm, Maurice stepped in to defend them from him, shaking his head as if to threaten him from harming his new friends, the look on his face clearly shows that Maurice was very angry with Koba, for attacking and trying to kill Alexander and Malcolm, for no apparent reason. Following Koba's takeover, Maurice remains loyal to Caesar, and is imprisoned by Koba for doing so. During Koba's final confrontation with Caesar, Koba wounds Maurice when he opens fire on Caesar.

"Son... will know... who was... father. And what... Caesar... did... for us."
Maurice's promise to Caesar before his passing[src]

Maurice was a compassionate and noble evolved orangutan who served as the main advisor and most trusted confidant of the late ape king, Caesar. He helped liberate his fellow apes from the humans in the Ape Rebellion, oversaw the teaching of the San Francisco Ape Colony and helped stop Colonel McCullough from exterminating the apes.

There, he witnessed the cruelty of humans, especially towards his fellow apes, from his cage, particularly from the shelter's abusive handler, Dodge Landon, who tormented the apes and made Maurice fearful of humanity, but also wise with experience of how to stay safe from them by keeping his sign language secret.[1]

The Ape Rebellion

Eventually, the army overpowered and disarmed the police and made their way across the bridge to Muir Woods, where they escaped into the trees to start a new society free of human oppression.[1]

Dawn of civilization

By 2026, the apes believed the humans to be extinct, and Maurice came to realize that while he held no resentment towards them, he never truly knew their kindness, unlike Caesar.[2][3]

Conflict with San Francisco's humans

However, Maurice, in his newfound sympathy for humans, came between Koba and Malcolm, protecting his new friends.[3]

Koba's usurpation

As a result, Koba and his followers proceeded to lock them in former Simian Flu quarantine cells as they engaged the humans in a massive battle and took control of the city, all while Maurice watched helplessly from his cage.[3]

Seeing his wounded friend, a furious Caesar tackled Koba and left him dangling from a ledge, before dropping him to his death.[3]

The Human-Ape War

Despite Koba's demise, Malcolm informed the apes that Dreyfus had contacted a military base, who were on their way to San Francisco to fight the apes, before the final battle. Malcolm and his family were told to flee to safety by Caesar, and so they vanished before the war began. Maurice then stood by Caesar's side as his chief advisor as the Ape Army fought the human paramilitary group, Alpha-Omega, in battle after battle, for the next two years.

In that time, Caesar became more angrier and brutal, but still compromising and empathetic, simply trying to find a way to end the war and stop the bloodshed, with Maurice often acting as his voice of reason in many situations. The apes also found a new haven deep in the forest, hidden by large waterfall.[3][4]

When Caesar found them dead in his bedroom, all empathy he had left for humans was stripped from him, and he became cold and emotional, with not even Maurice able to have him see reason.[4]

Maurice pointed out that he sounded like Koba in his hateful obsession, and Caesar, furious at the comparison, ordered Maurice and the others to rejoin the colony alone, and left for the facility to kill the Colonel alone.[4]

Maurice, Bad Ape, and Nova helped the apes out of their prisons and began herding them out of the facility just as the Northern Military arrived and fought Alpha-Omega, but Caesar planned to stay behind to finish off the Colonel, despite having regained empathy for humanity. When all the apes had escaped, they watched as the battle raged on, until finally Caesar destroyed a leaking gas tank with a grenade, destroying the base and only barely escaping to rejoin the colony.[4]

A new home

Led; by Caesar and following Rocket's directions, Maurice and the ape colony trekked for miles through forests and across a desert to find the oasis that; Blue Eyes and Rocket had found, a landscape; with lush vegetable life and running water. The apes finally settled down in their new home and Maurice sat; with Caesar; who had spared the Colonel's life. As they sat admiring the apes' new home, Caesar revealed he suffered a fatal wound from the battle and would soon pass away.

A distraught Maurice began to cry, but Caesar promised that; the ape colony would be fine; without him. Maurice in turn promised to look after Cornelius and that; he would grow up knowing what his father stood for and everything that; he did for the apes. Caesar then died peacefully, knowing that; the apes were safe and that; he had left behind a legacy of perseverance and honor that; would be continued; by Maurice and his son, Cornelius.[4]

In honor of Maurice's friend and king, Caesar, Maurice immortalized his legacy; by writing a book he called Caesar's Story and had the other apes contribute the tales of their experiences; with him to help preserve Caesar's memory for future generations.[5]

Personality

Maurice is a kind-hearted orangutan; who speaks very little, was rather intelligent even before being exposed to the ALZ-113, and is immensely loyal to his friends. Despite his compassion towards other apes, he was rather cynical and pessimistic when he first met Caesar. When Caesar exposed all the apes to the 113 and led them to freedom, Maurice grew more hopeful and wise.[1]

Maurice became softer and kinder towards humans, having now seen their capacity for both good and evil, so stood; by both the humans and Caesar during Koba's brief coup of the ape colony.[3]

He promised him that; he would care for his last remaining son, Cornelius and honored his legacy; with a book chronicling his life, loyal to his friend to his last moments of life.[4][5]

Abilities

  • Animal Strength: Like all orangutans, Maurice is extremely powerful and strong, during the Ape Rebellion, he is proven to be strong enough to lift a manhole lid and throw it at one of the police cars; which caused it to crash; into a police car. In War, Maurice was able to beat Boyle to death; with ease.
  • Genius-Level Intellect: Maurice's intellect is the highest among all apes and even humans; surpassed only by Caesar, Blue Eyes and Cornelius, even before Maurice was exposed to the ALZ-113, he had some level of intelligence, after Caesar arrived at the ape shelter, he was observing him and realize that the latter is much more intelligent than a normal ape, after he was exposed to the ALZ-113, Maurice became much more intelligent than before. By the time of the events of Dawn; Maurice's intelligence and IQ has increased to the point when he has been appointed by Caesar as one of the teachers of the new generation of apes, as well as being the overseer of the San Francisco Ape Colony.
  • Sign Language: Like Caesar, Maurice knows sign language, as he uses it as a way of communication, little is known about how or by who he learned it from, other then that he came from the circus. In Dawn, Maurice is seen teaching the young apes the basics of sign language in order for them to communicate proving that he is very skilled in teaching it to other apes as many apes either evolved or otherwise have learned the art from him and Caesar.
  • Expert Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Due to Maurice being the third-in-command of the Ape Army, he is a capable combatant. As seen when the apes were battling the humans during the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge, Maurice was able to defeat many police officers before they were forced to retreat.
  • Expert Horse Rider: Like many of the other apes, Maurice is able to ride a horse with ease.
  • Expert Leader: During the Battle on the Golden Gate Bridge, Maurice was seen as a capable leader as seen when he led the orangutans and some of the chimpanzees under the bridge in order to attack the police officers when their attention was focused on the other apes, this tactic was successful in obtaining victory.
  • Speech: Having inhaled the ALZ-113, like the other evolved apes, Maurice has gained the ability of speech.

Relationships

Notes

  • Maurice was one of the main protagonists in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the deuteragonist in War for the Planet of the Apes. He also served as the main narrator of Caesar’s Story.
  • Maurice was likely named after Maurice Evans, who played Doctor Zaius in the original Planet of the Apes. However, the character used the American pronunciation of the name, rather than Evans' British pronunciation.
  • Maurice is the only known orangutan in the Ape Colony to have been given the ALZ-113 drug.
    • It is likely the orangutans have been exposed to the virus after living with the other apes for so long.
  • At age twenty-five during Dawn, Maurice was one of the six oldest apes to appear.
  • After Caesar's death, it can be assumed that Maurice played some role in raising Cornelius alongside Lake and Rocket.
  • In War, Maurice is showing small signs of adaptation, as he appears to be able to knuckle-walk and arch his back like chimpanzees and gorillas, as opposed to an orangutan's traditional fist-walking and their back appears hunched.

Trivia

  • Maurice is likely named after Maurice Evans, the actor who portrayed Dr. Zaius in the original film series.
  • There are many postings on Karin Konoval's official public Facebook page that tell about her experiences getting to know real life orangutans. Konoval later confirmed that Maurice was based on "feisty" Bruno from the Los Angeles Zoo, on the "heart and soul" of Towan from Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, and on Clyde the walking orangutan.[6]
  • Karin Konoval had to wear weights as part of her motion capture suit.
  • Maurice was the third known ape to speak in the Chernin-produced Apes franchise. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, he told the humans in the Ape Village to leave when Koba took over with only one word, "Run".
  • Maurice received a scar on the top of his right cheek after Koba fired at him, Blue-Eyes, Rocket and Luca.
  • Maurice is the first ape that Caesar ever communicated with in sign.
    • He was also the last ape he communicated with in English at the time of his death.
  • Due to the time gap between War for the Planet of the Apes and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Maurice would've passed away sometime between those years.
