Hulss was the attendant to Voice Alaya of the city of Mak. As such he held a position of some authority during Alaya's crackdown on the human population of Mak. However, he was also secretly aiding Sullivan, leader of the human resistance. When his position was no longer tenable he deserted to the human exiles outside Mak. For some years he helped acquire arms from The Golden, and served as Sullivan's ambassador to the Great Khan. Here he discovered the Khan's true intentions and escaped in order to warn Sullivan. He was given charge of Julian by both Sullivan and Alaya, and managed to take him safely from Mak before it was destroyed, living with him into old age in the Empty Lands.
