Actress Freida Pinto plays the role of Caroline Aranha in the 2011 movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Pinto was born in Mumbai to Mangalorean Catholic parents Sylvia and Frederick (the surname "Pinto" is Portuguese - the first European settlers in India). Her sister Sharon is a producer with Indian news channel, NDTV. Freida acted in plays and amateur theater while completing her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English Literature at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. She anchored the travel show, Full Circle, on Zee International Asia Pacific between 2006-08, visiting Afghanistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Fiji among other countries. She also modeled with Elite Model Management and featured in several television and print advertisements for products such as Wrigley's Chewing Gum, Škoda, Vodafone India, Airtel, and DeBeers.

After six months of auditions, director Danny Boyle picked her out to play the female lead, Latika, for his movie Slumdog Millionaire (2008), for which the cast won a Screen Actors Guild Award. Pinto only began taking acting classes after completing her feature film debut, when she attended veteran theatre director Barry John's Acting Studio in Andheri. In 2010 she co-starred in Woody Allen's comedy-drama You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger with Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Anupam Kher and Naomi Watts, and as the title character in Miral.

Pinto Phaedra

In 2011 she will appear in the fantasy-action-drama, Immortals, in which she will play the oracle priestess Phaedra, and will also portray Caroline, a primatologist, in the science fiction film Rise of the Planet of the Apes, opposite James Franco. Pinto said of that role, "I auditioned for it without reading the entire script. I don’t remember when it was that I watched Planet of the Apes, but it was ages ago. When I read what the story was about - and the idea of the film is out there - I really thought that, yes, it was a big budget film and all of that, but it really had a soul in the kind of story that they really wanted to put out there. It’s a battle between humans and apes with humans trying to make themselves superior by exploiting another animal. When I read the script, finally, after auditioning, I found myself even more drawn to it. I also like films with a lot of animals in it, and what happens to animals really does break my heart."[1]
