Severn Darden was an American actor born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Darden was the son of a prominent New Orleans attorney and began his career with the Second City Compass Players troupe in Chicago. He made numerous appearances in 1960's TV shows such as The Monkees, and his film credits include, Justine with Anouk Aimee, The President's Analyst and The Last Movie. He was seen as 'J. Hovah', leader of a weird religious sect in Vanishing Point. In 1972, Severn played Chief Inspector Kolp in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. He reprised the role for the 1973 film, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, however this time, playing Kolp as a mutated Governor of the Forbidden Zone. His style was one of deliciously well-placed sneers. Much of the personality of the character was engineered by Darden himself. He must be one of the few actors who could so conviningly play a villain one moment, and then have one on his side when he portrayed the hero the next. Severn passed away from a heart attack in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 66.[1]
