Dr. Leonard Hercules "Bones" McCoy is the chief medical officer aboard the USS Enterprise in the 23rd century. He was hesitant to follow the Klingons into their portal system because he was scared of the thought of not being able to return.

- Captain Kirk usually calls McCoy by his nickname Bones. Which presumably is a shorter version of sawbones. Which is a nickname for a doctor.
- He is also one of the only crewmen close enough to the captain that regularly calls him by his first name.
