The Bonobo (Pan paniscus) is one of the species of ape featured in the Planet of the Apes franchise. They come from the same "Pan" genus as the common chimpanzee and have a close resemblance to them, but darker and slightly smaller. Like the two species of gorilla, these two species are native to the continent of Africa, but they evolved separately to the north (common chimpanzee) and south (bonobo) of the Congo river. They have a population of around 50,000.
Bonobos do not explicitly appear in the original Planet of the Apes film series; Koba is the first and only known bonobo to appear, in the current reboot film series.
